Hi! I’m Gana
I come from a middle class family of six in Malaysia and have been living in Scotland for the past 10 years. I still remember back then when I was a student here living on a tight budget. Only way to save my money was to work part time and cook my own food. All I had was a bunch of post-it notes of my mom’s recipe and willingness to experiment.
I started making simple food like omelettes, fried rice, pasta and sandwiches and slowly started being a bit braver and ventured in to making curries and roasts. I started inviting friends over to sample my food and when the compliments came in, it encouraged me to try newer things. Somewhere along the line I realised that I enjoy cooking. I’m into little bit of baking as well these days.
Its been 5 years now since I graduated and got a proper job with a not so bad salary. But I still enjoy cooking. I recently got married to my wife, Lisa who I’ve known for six years and both of us enjoy cooking. Both of us are trying to get on the property ladder just now and its not easy if you don’t have a fat deposit or parents with fat wallets – we have neither.
Because I’m Malaysian and Lisa’s Scottish, we had to have two weddings – one in Malaysia and one in Cullen Scotland so that both sides of the family could attend the celebration. I’m proud to say that we managed to do that with our own savings.
I don’t think we could have managed that without being careful of our expenditure. What amazes me is that we didn’t have to eat like peasants to save money. In fact we had tasty delicious meals most of the time!
This is what I would like to blog about! – making tasty, easy to cook meals that are not expensive and sharing ways to save money when buying food ingredients and any other tips and tricks to help you cook and enjoy lovely food without costing you the earth!
